Boola Katitjin Murdoch University
What did we do?
We were part of a team, led by Lyons Architecture, to design Boola Katitjin – 16000m2 of collaborative learning space, informal peer-to-peer learning and academic workplace.
The university was keen to demonstrate its commitment to design innovation and sustainable practices and to present a fresh approach to learning in a post-pandemic world.
What did we do?
We had two roles on the project: the development of a digital engagement strategy and the design of the public ‘welcome space’, sometimes described as the building’s front door!
A circular motif extends from the outside pavement into the building, suggesting that this is a place of safety and pause.
Inside, the space is double-height and embellished, creating a feeling of immersion and awe as you arrive. The ceiling is covered in dowel lighting, an elegant design element and reference to the Noongar story of the kulbardi (magpie) and the creation of the sky.
The space has been designed to accommodate a range of functions, including evening events, presentations, and informal catchups. A small café provides coffee and low-key refreshments.
Remington Matters made the oversized table from West Australian timbers; its fluid shape is striking and practical, allowing multiple people to comfortably share the space.
A digital screen circumnavigates the room, connecting the space to the broader digital engagement strategy.
What is the impact?
The building was officially opened in February 2023, just in time for the start of the new academic year. Time will tell what impact the building has on the university community, but it is hoped that it will encourage students to connect with campus (and each other!) in a meaningful way.
