Martu Art Centres
The Martu Art Centres will provide much-needed space for local artists to gather, paint, yarn and enjoy a contemporary studio that supports arts practice and economic independence.
This project, funded through the Federal Government’s Growing Regions Program, involved designing and building new arts centres for three Martu communities in WA’s Western Desert region.
Several low-profile buildings, including the main art centre, accommodation building, and carport/storage area, fit neatly within the landscape and surrounding built environment. The modest shed-like forms, with gently sloping skillion roofs, are clad with galvanised corrugated metal and arranged to create easy movement between indoors and out.
A recessed verandah provides entry to the main art building. Here, an undercover outdoor studio and breezeway anchors the activities within. Supporting spaces are located to the sides and include a flexible indoor painting area, admin office, stretching room, and amenities.
The art centres include two one-bedroom accommodation units for visiting artists and arts coordinators. The interior design features colours that add delight and distinguish the various activities.
The design was developed using a transportable construction methodology, allowing the buildings to be built in a controlled factory setting, minimising the time and costs of on-site construction.
